Overview

This project consists of improvements to SR 51 in the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County. Work includes rehabilitation of the West Carson Street (S.R. 51) viaduct north of the Corliss Tunnel. The scope of work involves the replacement of a 335 ft viaduct structure constructed of reinforced concrete cantilevered slabs and concrete columns. The viaduct carries a portion of West Carson Street under the Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge and over a void area that is supported on walls that parallel CSX railroad tracks. The profile grade of West Carson Street will be lowered approximately one foot under the Norfolk Southern structure to meet vertical clearance requirements. The viaduct structure will be replaced with structural backfill capped with a structural concrete cantilevered slab supported by the existing wall. The adjacent roadway approaches will be reconstructed to accommodate the lower profile. The project also includes sidewalk replacement, roadway reconstruction/milling, drainage, traffic signals, lighting, and other miscellaneous construction.
